Down the Hall on Your Left

This site is a blog about what has been coasting through my consciousness lately. The things I post will be reflections that I see of the world around me. You may not agree with me or like what I say. In either case – you’ll get over it and I can live with it if it makes you unhappy. Please feel free to leave comments if you wish . There’s Something Funny About Him

SOME PEOPLE ARE FUNNY. Of course there are two kinds of “Funny.” There are people who are Funny (Ha! Ha!) And then there are people who are Funny (Uh, Oh). Sometimes it is difficult to tell them apart.

What is it that differentiates these two flavors of Funny? I think it all has to do with their sense of humor. They both have that sense of humor, but it gets displayed differently. An Example:

For Mr. Funny (Ha! Ha!) – A joke. “Why did the Dragon take some Pepto-Bismol?”

“Because he ate someone who disagreed with him.”

That’s it. Simple and to the point. Now that same joke told by Mr. Funny (Uh, Oh)

“Why did the Dragon take some Pepto-Bismol?”

“Because he ate someone who disagreed with him after ripping off his arms and dousing them with kerosene, lighting a fire and toasting marshmallows, while the man screamed in agony. And then the Dragon watched reruns of Alf.”

I know the differences are subtle, but if you listen closely you can spot the clues that indicate the “Uh, Oh!” factor.

I once had an Uncle who straddled the fine line between the two kinds of Funny. He was a sort of (Ha!, Oh). When he told a joke only half of the people would laugh. The other half would head for the nearest exit.

He sadly passed away from a drug overdose. He OD’d on St. Joseph’s Children’s Aspirin. He would down whole bottles of the pills. He got younger and younger, and then one day he just wasn’t there anymore (Uh, Oh).

See what I mean?

What one person thinks is Funny might be looked at as either not Funny or even Tragic by someone else. Slipping and falling on a Banana peel for example. Is that Funny? I think it all depends on your Point of View. If someone you don’t know slips and falls – that’s probably Funny and worth a laugh. If it is you going down after stepping on the Banana peel – well, that is more than likely a Tragedy and not at all Funny. However, if you are the Banana it doesn’t matter because you are not a sentient being anyway.

While on the surface this different kind of Funny stuff may not seem to be all that important in the day to day scheme of things. I disagree. I think that it is important. It is of critical importance in an election year, which is just about every year I guess. Let me explain why there is this Funny importance.

I do not remember the last time I saw a Politician or a Politician Wannabe who had a Funny (Ha! Ha!) Sense of Humor. It just doesn’t seem to be part of the genetic makeup of Office Seekers. Unfortunately, that doesn’t stop them from trying to be Funny and the results are dismal. They can’t get more than half of the People/Voters to laugh. That is not a recipe for electoral victory. The reaction of the People/Voters is all too often ridicule or downright hostility. Reactions that are well earned, I think.

I once asked a candidate if he knew the origin of the word Politics. He admitted that he did not. I had

set him up for a joke.

“Politics comes from two words in Ancient Greek: ‘Poly’ meaning ‘Many’ and ‘Tics’ meaning ‘Blood Sucking Parasites’.”

He didn’t get it at all. He looked at me as if I was the one who was Funny (Uh, Oh). He turned and walked away. Mission accomplished!

I hope you have found this tutorial has been helpful or at least enlightening. If not, it’s your fault.

Have a nice day.
