What Are The Odds?
The Indiana State Legislature, AKA “The House of Hoosier,” has given approval for there to be two new Casinos opening in the State. It has taken decades for that approval to be granted.
The only possible roadblock in the way is that there is to be a local referendum vote this fall or next spring at the latest. Local opposition is what has screwed the pooch in the past. This time it looks like the odds are much more likely to favor the Casino than ever before.
An informed electorate indeed.
There are already Casinos in Indiana strewn about the state providing tax revenues and jobs in a state that can certainly use both. A Casino in Terre Haute (That’s French for “Place your bets!”) would do the same and I can’t argue against that…and I saw that movie too. Joe Pesci chewed the scenery like a starving wolverine. I loved it.
Those who are against allowing a Casino to open its doors in this area, when pressed for their reasoning, say that there are weak people who will gamble away the rent and the baby food money and they need to be protected from themselves.
As if there is no gambling going on in this town right now. These people who are against the Casino are the same people who would have voted for Prohibition because then everyone would stop drinking. In other words these are the people who see themselves as the Parents of everyone in town and only they are capable of making mature decisions. They are blind to the reality of modern life.
Uber-Mommy is alive and well in this town.
Will there be people who might go to the Casino and wager to the detriment of themselves or their family? Of course, but it is not the Casino that would trigger that behavior. It would just put those people in an environment where they would be less likely to be robbed, assaulted or murdered while gambling.
The Casinos are absolutely paranoid about having minors or people with “gambling problems’ on their premises. Their businesses are heavily regulated and monitored by the State. Everyone should be so concerned, but they aren’t. Casinos are better neighbors than the people who just want to run other people’s lives.
So that is where this issue squats at this point in time. Everyone else is OK with the idea of there being a Casino nearby…except some very loud people who feel that they know better and it is only them who “Care” about the problems of the world.
I’m hoping that this time, finally, the honest adults will carry the day, but I wouldn’t bet on it.
