Down the Hall on Your Left

This site is a blog about what has been coasting through my consciousness lately. The things I post will be reflections that I see of the world around me. You may not agree with me or like what I say. In either case – you’ll get over it and I can live with it if it makes you unhappy. Please feel free to leave comments if you wish . What Ever Became Of Her?

Alleged Nigerian Princess

HERE IS A QUESTION FOR YOU. Now, this is a bit of a throwback. It wasn’t that long ago when it seemed that every third e-mail that I received was from a “Nigerian Princess” who needed my help in unlocking a huge bank account in Africa…And for just a few thousand dollars of “Good Faith” money I would be given a payment of 67 Gazillion Dollars. I never answered her pleas. But now, several years after the fact I’m beginning to wonder – What if she was for real?

What if…?

Just think about it for a second. If that Nigerian Princess who had access to millions of e-mail addresses, but not that money, was really an honest young lady begging for help. Maybe I should have tried to help her. After all, I have a soft heart and I sure could have used that 67 Gazillion bucks.

Late at night when I can’t sleep I sit and think about that Nigerian Princess. First of all, I didn’t know that Nigeria had Princesses, but it could be I suppose. Those faraway African nations have their own thing going. It’s a lot like Chicago in that way I guess.

If I had just sent Her Royal Highness that money I might be one of the wealthiest people in the world now. Me and Bill Gates.  Me and Warren Buffett.  Me and any number of Baseball Players.

I’m aware of that old Scriptural reference about the love of money being the root of all evil, but I don’t love money, I just like it a lot and would like to know it better. Living my life while having a bank account with all of those Zeroes in it would be a challenge, but I think I’m up to it. I’ve already spent a lot of years dealing with an account with only one Zero in it. I’d like to get a lick on the other end of that lollipop.

As I look at the e-mails I get these days and, unlike the offers from my old friend the Nigerian Princess, I find nobody making me such lucrative offers. It seems that all they want today is for me to buy something or to give them my money with no promise of any return. As if I would fall for that.

When I expressed my regret to my friends and family members about not helping the Princess all those years ago I was greeted with a barrage of Hoots, Hollers, and the occasional offer to drive me to the Mayo Clinic. It bothered me that all of those people were so hard-hearted.

I never have learned the fate of that Nigerian Princess. I do hope that someone did help her, but I’ve not heard a word from her or about her. Perhaps I should dig up the phone number of my old favorite psychic Miss Cleo. Remember her? She was everywhere on Television at about the same time that the Nigerian Princess and I were corresponding.

Coincidence? I think not.
