TODAY IS THE FIRST DAY OF JUNE. I’m sorry, but didn’t this year just start a week or two ago? How can we be closing in on the halfway point already? I know that time can slip away if you don’t pay attention, but I have been keeping my eye, both of them actually now that they are cataract-free, tightly focused on both the calendar and the clock.
Hmmm? Is something fishy going on around here?
I know that some people are quite suspicious of Daylight Savings Time – leaping ahead and falling back and all that – but that is just one hour here and there. It’s not nearly enough to account for the sudden appearance of June when my soul and body tell me that it can’t even be St. Patrick’s Day yet.
Where does Time go? There is Today. I can see that right in front of me, and then there is Yesterday – I remember that clearly.
And then there is Tomorrow. It’s not here yet, but it is close enough to smell its approach.
That’s it – Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow. There are no other categories to squeeze in there where Time can hide out.
Perhaps I really am being lax in my attention to detail. Am I letting days, weeks, even moths pull a fast one and get past me?
I do know that before I retired I was much more Time conscious. I worked Monday through Friday from an early Morning hour until the late Afternoon. There were places I had to be at specific times on specific days. I even carried around a “Day Planner” to keep track of Days, Hours, and even Minutes.
On top of that there were things like “Must See TV” every Thursday – Shows to be seen that came on at certain times only. Of course, it now appears that a portion of “Must See TV” is headed off to prison. He will have to keep track of his own time slot now I guess.
Since I retired eight years ago (No! It can’t be Eight years! One, two years at the most!) my daily habits have changed. I don’t own a Day Planner any longer. The only occasions when I must be at a certain place at a given time are for doctor’s appointments and those are mainly “Sit and Wait” events. “The Doctor will be right with you,” type of things.
There are theories that Time moves in more than one direction. I think “Instant Replay” proves that. Counter theories say that Time moves not at all, but we just perceive the passage of Time. I don’t buy that one. If Time didn’t move why do Leftovers go bad and Coupons expire?
Einstein’s theory says that Time actually slows down or speeds up depending on how fast you and I are moving. Well, I’m moving slower than I used to so why does Time appear to be moving faster for me? I think Einstein also had a theory about what he liked to smoke in his pipe.
There is another theory which says that Time doesn’t move at the same speed for everyone. Hmmm? Just go to your High School Reunion to see evidence that this theory might have merit. Of course, who married a Plastic Surgeon might also come into play here. Further research is needed.
As I continue on my journey through time I’m beginning to think that Time is more of a Philosophy than a chunk of Science. A watched pot never boils, but let that three-minute egg keep cooking and in just a moment it will be time for a bowl of cereal.
Everybody seems to have their own theory. Some, All, or None of them may be accurate.
Only Time will tell.
