Down the Hall on Your Left

This site is a blog about what has been coasting through my consciousness lately. The things I post will be reflections that I see of the world around me. You may not agree with me or like what I say. In either case – you’ll get over it and I can live with it if it makes you unhappy. Please feel free to leave comments if you wish . Cracker!

THE OTHER DAY A FRIEND MENTIONED TO ME that she had a decision to make. It seems that she has a jar that she has used to hold crackers and, for reasons unknown to me, she has evicted the crackers and now fills the jar with cat treats. The decision part of this is whether or not she should tell anyone. It seems that one member of the family is a regular customer of the Cracker Jar.

I don’t make up these things. I don’t have to.

This move has generated a discussion about the effect this might have if the cracker lover doesn’t notice the switcheroo and continues to happily munch away. The only impact as far as I can see is that the cat might get upset at having to share the treats with somebody. Cats don’t share well when it comes to food. True that, if they really like you, they might bring you a dead mouse or bird, but not when it comes to kitty treats. The human might think that the new snacks are those little Pepperidge Farm things.

Some people in the discussion were concerned that the cat treats might be harmful to humans. I wouldn’t sweat that. Some people eat things that a cat wouldn’t touch at gunpoint. If someone will knowingly eat Pork Rinds, Okra, or anything from one of those Chinese Buffet Restaurants I can’t imagine any danger from a kitty treat. In fact, it might help their night vision. I would, however, keep an eye on the Snacker in case he starts to claw at the sofa. Other than that, let him munch away.

Those little treats might be a good source of Fish Oil. I don’t know and I’m not going to run a taste test on this. I have better things to do. Well, that’s not completely true, but I’m still not going to call a focus group on this question.

I do know for a fact that you shouldn’t feed cat food to a dog and vice versa – that’s what I’ve read anyway, but those reports never talk about humans eating pet food. Cats and dogs eat human food all the time with no apparent ill effect. I once had a cat that would eat sugar right from the sugar bowl if you let her. She lived to be 19. Smartest cat I ever knew. She could do your taxes. I miss that cat.

Another reason I wouldn’t worry about all of this business about crackers and cat treats is my brother. For years he snacked on Milk Bone Dog Biscuits with a dab of Skippy peanut butter on them. It never did him any harm as far as we could see – and he always had the cleanest teeth.

I advised my friend to let the cat treats fall where they may and let the Cracker Snacker discover the menu change the hard way – by the mouthful. If he inquires about the change just tell him that they are a new cracker – from Japan. Very trendy. He’ll swallow that… so to speak.
